The plot, the plan, and what’s next.

Fortune Farms is a working operation today — maize and mill, a chicken house and hatchery, a piggery, and premium fertilizer made from the waste — built from nothing in about two years. Here’s how it’s laid out now, and where it’s headed: biogas, fish, and Bitcoin.

Our story

Our History & Our Future.

Year by year — the milestones where they landed, and the quiet years in between. The further out, the looser it gets.

    Done

    The promise

    Alex, 18, volunteers in Uganda with the International Relief and Friendship Foundation. He makes lifelong friends — including Tadeo, now managing director — and promises to come back one day and build a farm.

    Building the capital

    Years of a 1st-class civil engineering degree and Network Rail, plus a self-taught Amazon FBA business and Google Ads contracting — the savings to make the promise real, all self-funded.

    Built from scratch

    Land leased and the whole farm built in about two years: chicken house, hatchery, piggery, granary and maize machinery, storage, well, security fence, solar and mains power. ~£65k / $86k invested by March 2022.

    Maize milling first

    Refocus on a financially self-sustaining core: grow and mill our own maize so feed costs drop ~70%. Flour for people, bran for the animals — the foundation everything else sits on.

    Eggs & fertilizer at scale

    Scale the laying flock toward 2,000 birds for steady egg income, and turn the litter into premium compost, biochar and liquid fertilizer. The longer-term aim is to bring the cultivated area up to around 12.5 acres, fed by the farm’s own fertilizer.

    Planned

    Biogas & clean cooking

    Anaerobic digesters turn animal waste into methane for clean cooking (replacing charcoal) and the dewatering stage into top-grade fertilizer. Add fish farming (tilapia) and aquaponics, and expand into goats, pigs and cows.

  17. The vision

    Energy, Bitcoin & a school

    A methane engine turns surplus gas into electricity, and the excess into Bitcoin mining — banking the unbanked via the Lightning Network. Then a technology school, and a model other Ugandan farmers can plug into.
